Operation Cool Shade Tree Planting Program

Everyone knows that trees are beautiful but, did you know that shade trees can lower the outside wall temperature of your home or business as much as 20 percent? That can help lower you cooling costs in the summer.

To help its member beautify their homes while saving money on their electric bills, Trico offers Operation Cool Shade. The program, run in cooperation with the Pima County Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners, allows members to purchase desert-tolerant shade trees at discounted prices.

If you'd like more information on the Operation Cool Shade program, please fill out our online form. We'll put your name in our database and will be in touch with you this fall regarding payment for the trees, tree-care classes and tree pick-up day. Please do not send payment for trees at this time.

If you have questions about the program, please call Mimi Villafane at 744-2944, ext. 1363. If you have questions about basic tree care and planting, please call Pima County Master Gardeners at 626-5161. Or, visit them at http://cals.arizona.edu/pima/.

Operation Cool Shade - Answers to Tree Questions

Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about the tree program. If there are any other questions, don’t hesitate to call me.

1. How big are the trees?

The trees are in 5 gallon containers and should be somewhere between 3 – 4 feet tall.

2. Do I have to pay $11 per tree now?

You will need to send payment of $11 per tree with the Tree Adoption Contract (the order form) to reserve those trees in your name. Remember it is a first-come-first-served program, so it is best to get your order in before the deadline.

3. What do I have to do to get the $5 billing credit and how will I get the $5 billing credit?

Once you attend the Tree Care Class offered by Trico this year, you will receive a billing credit of $5 per tree ordered. It will appear on your Trico Electric Bill as a credit and will have a description next to it such as – Tree Credit.

4. If I have more than one property, can I order more trees?

NO! If we let members with several properties order more trees, we would run out of trees much faster. Also, we feel it would give those members an unfair advantage. Each member, regardless of number of properties, can only order 3 trees.

5. Why can’t I send my tree information or contract in with my bill?

Your Trico Electric Bill goes to a processing center in Phoenix. Our Communications Department is located at 8600 W. Tangerine Road in Marana. If you send your contract or information request with your bill it will go to Phoenix first and have to be forwarded back here to our offices in Tucson. That causes a time delay of several days and could possibly cost you the trees.

6. You say that your deadline is September 14. If I get my contract or order form in by September 14, I’ll still get my trees won’t I?

This is a first-come, first-served program. We have a limited number of 1500 trees. We could sell out of trees before the September 14 deadline. That is why we suggest that you send your order in as soon as possible to insure that your order can be filled.

7. When will we get our trees?

The trees will be available in the beginning of November. We will send you a letter a couple of weeks before to inform you of the date, time and place of the tree pick-up. (at Trico Electric, November 3 7:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)

8. What if I can’t pick up my trees? Can someone else pick them up for me?

You can have a neighbor, friend or family member pick up your trees for you. All we ask is that you make sure that they have your pink receipt and your permission to get the trees for you.

9. I live in Sahuarita. Why don’t you have a tree pick up there?

The tree pick up will be at Trico Electric Offices on Tangerine Road. We will have 1500 trees to pass out that day and over 40 volunteers helping from 7:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It would be a logistical nightmare to try to do this at two locations. We also do not have the employee manpower to accommodate such an endeavor.

10. When and where are the tree care classes?

The tree care classes will be offered in September at Trico Offices on Tangerine Rd. and in October at the Sahuarita School District Auditorium. The class dates will be announced in the brochure that we send out with the Tree Adoption Contract.

11. I can’t make it to any of the Tree Care Classes. Will you have any make-up classes?

No. There will be no make-up classes. That is why we have offered 3 different days with different times to accommodate our members.

The tree program is over for this year. Watch for information on Operation Cool Shade 2008 in June.
